iTunes Review

We could listen to Peter, Paul and Mary's self-titled debut a hundred times and never get tired of their stirring harmonies and heartfelt sentiments of peace and love. The entire album glows with the earnestness and passion that defined the culture of the '60s, from Mary Travers' lilting soprano on "500 Miles" to the striking sense of social change that permeates their moving rendition of Pete Seeger's folk classic "Where Have All the Flowers Gone."

The beginning of the best of our generation

I remember bringing this album home the first time. My mom saw it and thought I'd gone "beatnik". Only those of you as old as me will even identify with that term. When she heard the music, though, she recognized, as did I and everyone I knew, that here was real expression and musicianship. These cuts are the foundation for everything that PP&M would do in the future. Anyone who has even a passing interest in PP&M MUST have this album.

True Classic

The word "classic" gets tossed around a lot, but this recording qualifies. My dad was a huge fan of PP&M's music (if not their politics), and I knew every word to every song of this album practically before I was out of my crib! As I got older, my musical tastes changed, but I always come back to this album as a touchstone of near-perfection. PP&M were wonderful musicians, and great interpreters (often underrated, but one needs only to listen to their Dylan covers to realize their genius). With the passing of Mary Travers, the world has lost one of its most endearing voices, but this set of amazing tracks lives on, as it definitely deserves to.

The most popular folk group of the 1960s, Peter, Paul and Mary in later decades have also proved themselves to be among the most durable music acts in history. Their longevity dwarfs that of the Weavers, while the fact that the trio continues to be associated with a major record label (Warner Bros.) after decades in the business sets them apart from rivals like the Kingston Trio and the Brothers Four. Then again, perhaps it isn't so surprising -- Peter, Paul and Mary's roots run deeper than almost...
