iTunes Editors’ Notes

Petra Haden comes from a musical family, and she uses her musical genes to do something innovative and interesting. She'd previously recorded an a cappella track-by-track cover of The Who Sell Out, and she's followed it with an album of movie themes. In strategic spots her father, Charlie Haden, joins her with non-vocal instruments, as do Brad Mehldau and Bill Frisell. The remainder of the music comes from Haden's throat. She even handles the vocal lines to "Goldfinger Main Title" with her capable singing. The scores that are already familiar to listeners might inspire the most awe, but if her performances can be heard free from association, it's obvious how brilliant these songs and performances are. "Carlotta's Gallop" from 8 1/2 builds to a dizzying climax. "God's Lonely Man" from Taxi Driver is pure intensity and a great blurring of instruments and voice. She even sings the sentimental "It Might Be You" from Tootsie as a sweet ballad, for a touch of the conventional. Whether it's "The Planet Krypton" from Superman or "Psycho Main Title," Haden approaches the music with sincerity and affection.

Whoa

This is incredible. I haven't heard a voice like this, maybe ever. So creative so passionate. On it might be you, she sounds like a young Michael Jackson, bravo.

Stupid

She's a great singer, but it's ridiculous to sing instrumentals. "Hand Covers Bruise" is just embarrassing

Fantastic!

Petra's combination of creativity and talent are a treasure to behold.. I've had the good fortune to hear her in concert as a fan, then perform with her live more recently. What a treat! (how unfortunate that Anabel found it somehow appropriate to dismiss one's entire approach to making music).

One of three daughters of jazz bassist Charlie Haden, Petra Haden was born in 1971 in Manhattan. Haden's early life was steeped in music, and not only due to her father's influence. She and her two sisters routinely sang together, and at a very early age she demonstrated not only an extraordinary ear for music, but also the ability to re-create the sounds of musical instruments with her own voice — in pop, classical, jazz, blues, or any other idiom or genre one cared to name. She began studying...
