Album Review

Brazil's broad mix of cultures and peoples has often resulted in brash, stunning musical hybrids that sound utterly unlike anything else the world over. Uakti have been described as embracing classical, new age, and jazz as well as the obvious descriptor, world music. In truth, the group embodies elements of all four, and Aguas da Amazonia is an intriguing album for any of those interested in the above. Their fourth album for Point Music also includes collaborations with minimalist composer Philip Glass.

Outstanding Album

I found this music via the movie, Yes, which used #7, Paru River, as a sort of theme. All these pieces are rhythmic, harmonic, and hypnotic (in a good way). As someone who normally can take P. Glass in small doses only, I was surprised by how this instrumentation (and percussion) makes this an album I listen to all the time; it makes me happy, it calms me down.

as a high school pit player...

Well our indoor percussion show involves a lot of really neat Philip Glass parts in it...including some parts from "Aguas da Amazonia: Metamorphosis". This music is really unique and very beautiful with a sound of its own. The way that he incorporates pan flutes and glass marimbas and just lots of random, sometimes even common household, objects. : )

Aguas da Amazonia

This music is a fabulous combination of the best of Glass and the artistic abilities of Uakti. I have never loved this music more than when I hear it with the glass marimbas. The reason I find it so exciting is that while listening I feel the natural rythms of water consoling the beat of my own heart. soothing, cool, and unique. I never tire of it and use it often to help me meditate and focus on what is most important in my life. I just LOVE it.
