Quite possibly one of Glass's finest theater works ever. A near perfect blend of text and music-- the almost symphonic sounds he manages to achieve with just 3 pianos is mind boggling. This piece must have been thrilling to experience live; but this recording does it more than justice. (Side note: there is a piano suite of this available on "Music 4 Hands"-- a pale and sadly, almost amateur rendering of this music.)

Even if I weren't a fan of Philip Glass's work, I'd still have to admit that this is one of his finest compositional moments ever. The three pianos play with such intensity and passion that even though most of the songs are in French, aside from selected English dialogue by the narrator, it's never difficult to figure out exactly what emotions the characters are feeling and must be expressing. At various points during the performance, I got goosebumps just listening to the pianos, much less the actual singing which is also quite good. A worthy performance on the whole!

Glass's very different compositions for the Cocteau trilogy are some of his most lyrical. "Terrible Interlude" -- like the last movement in String Quartet No. 5 -- still gives me chills.
