Album Review

Provision expands the frothy, synthesized blue-eyed soul of Cupid & Psyche 85 by emphasizing the bouncy, mechanical dance-pop rhythms and creating lush backing tracks with layers of keyboards. To be certain, it's a pleasant listen, and several tracks are pretty entertaining, but the music is so lightweight and Green Gartside's voice is so thin that the album virtually disappears into thin air, leaving behind no impression. That is, of course, with the exception of the unresolved question of why on earth Miles Davis contributed a trumpet solo to "Oh Patti."

Killer / No Filler part II

Nothing finer than 80s Scritti Politti. "Cupid & Psyche 85" is their masterpiece for sure, but "Provision" was a worthy follow-up, in my opinion. Some of the songs are a little more subtle than their catchiest stuff, but that only means they require a little more time to sink in. I love every song on "Provision" just like I do on "C&P." My only criticism of "Provision" is that either the drums are mixed too hot or Green's vocals are mixed too low, or both. The mix is the only thing that separates these two "killer/no filler" albums. It's 2010 and I still have both of these albums in frequent rotation.

Mastered for iTunes or...

A great album. Please give us a Mastered for iTunes or at least a remastered version? This album deserves it.

A few shining moments among the wreckage

Crippled by a mix which buries Green Gartside's one-of-a-kind vocals, Provision is quite a mess for those expecting a good follow-up to Cupid and Psyche '85. The shiny technopop of the earlier album still comes through, but the hooks are fewer and harder to pick out. The amazing clockwork arrangements on "Best Thing Ever" and " Philosophy Now" tickle the sonic tastebuds, and Gartside's erudite lyrics are still there, but they are hidden. Almost a self-destructive, anti-pop gesture from the Welsh wunderkind!

Scritti Politti is the primary vehicle for Welsh singer/songwriter Green Gartside. Few figures in pop music can claim Gartside's distinctive credentials: an artist who began in London's subcutaneous underground in the late '70s but ultimately rose to the top of the U.K. pop charts, a serious devotee of linguistic structuralism who can hold his own in a conversation with his friend, arch deconstructionist Jacques Derrida, and a handsome, dreamy-eyed gentleman who has, in the opinion of one critic,...
