Coming Into Their Own - Phoenix Effect's New Album Soars

I've been a Phoenix Effect fan since their first album (see my review for Cyanide Skies), and hoped back then they would be able to further flesh out their signature sound and take their place in among the greats of Finnish rock/metal. I'm happy to say it appears they are doing just that.

The soaring vocals of the opening song, "Black Art," carry a catchy melody and adept guitar. "Euphoria" opens in a manner reminiscent to a Sonata Arctica song, though clearly remaining comfortably within PE's own style, as one can tell when the soaring chorus is reached. The next couple songs play with a different vibe entirely, notably reminiscent of Sublime's ska beat at the beginning of "A Light to Guide," then almost a straight pop in "Babylon."

I should perhaps take time out at this point to show appreciation for the lyrics, which are, like their counterparts Poets of the Fall, much more well thought-out and executed than the typical rock/metal song, in my opinion.

Prepare for some danceable beats in "All 4 Nothing 4 All," a crowd-pleaser. There is a lot to love in the next few songs, especially the impressively-sung chorus in "Into Flame" and lovely singing guitar line afterwards. Tthe last few songs of the album are what I'd characterize as PE's signature style: solid instrumental lines, changing up the rhythm, beautiful soaring lead-ins to equally beautiful soaring choruses, inspiring lyrics.

Overall PE has a solid new album, proving that they're truly coming into their own as a force in both the Finnish and international rock scene.

Phoenix Effect

I bought this cd the other day and I am in love with this band! I already purchased Broken Promises and Lucky Star a while back (fantastic songs), so I was up for some more! I love each song on this cd and the raw metal rock reminds me of the grunge band era. The vocals are excellent with the lead and the back up in perfect edgy harmony minus the screaming, so rare in most metal bands today, allowing the poetic lyrics to shine through.
The guitar stands out as well adding some hot riffs which complete the sound of what I would call progressive grunge metal rock.
Now I am hooked on another great band!
Those of you who love some new awesome rock along with fantastic vocals and lyrics, must check out this band and the their new cd!
