Album Review

"Physical" became such a monster hit — not just a hit, but a pop-culture phenomenon that was impossible to escape — that it became difficult to view its accompanying album as anything other than a conduit for the single. The thing was, Physical was a damn good record, in many ways one of Olivia Newton-John's very best. Picking up where Totally Hot and Xanadu left off, Physical skillfully balances catchy yet mellow dance cuts with immaculately crafted adult contemporary pop and ballads. The title track, of course, is the best example of the dance side, but "Landslide," "Make a Move on Me," and "Promise (Dolphin Song)" illustrate that Physical wasn't a one-hit record at all — if anything, they hold up better than the big hit. There is some filler here — none of her records were free from that curse — but it's well-made filler and helps make Physical one of the most enjoyable albums of her career.

80's Pop at it's BEST!

Olivia was the untimate 80's Pop/Dance Diva and Physical is an album the represents the 80's at its best. The single Physical was the #1 song of the 8-'s (10 weeks #1.) Make a Move on Me, Landsilde, Strangers Touch and Carried Away all still stand the test of time!

By and far one of the most well produced and performed records in her career. The title track is certainly the most popular, but not the best track on the record. Listen to "Landslide" or "Falling" Olivia may not have the strongest voice like Celine, she may not hit the big notes like Barbra or Mariah, but the woman knows how to sell a song. When Olivia sings a song, she makes it about the song, and not about her. There is not another female performer out there I can think of that can do that the way she does.

Nostalgia Rush

This album will not only bring back lost memories for those who enjoyed it when it was released, but for the new listener the album is very well produced, even by 2006 standards. With the tech improvements in the last decade, current (2006) music sounds 'fuller', i.e. making use of more tracks, more integration with bass, and untold manipulations of vocals. It gives for a more 'involved' listening experience, however I also love a great melody and lyrics which complement th melody, even if they are not very sophisticated. Physical still hits these notes. Love it.

Olivia Newton-John skillfully made the transition from popular country-pop singer to popular mainstream soft rock singer, becoming one of the most successful vocalists of the '70s in the process. The transition itself wasn't much of a stretch — her early-'70s hits "I Honestly Love You" and "Have You Never Been Mellow" were country only in the loosest sense — yet the extent of her success in both fields was remarkable. As a country singer, her first five charting singles all went Top Ten...
