Rachmaninoff Concertos--Earl Wild

While there is a great deal to admire in Wild's legendary playing, he can't avoid the trap that many great virtuosos fall into--playing too fast. He can do it, God love him, but we lose some of the poetry and passion along the way. After all, Horowitz said that the key to playing bravura style is not to play too fast. If we actually hear all the notes, there is so much more excitement! But Wild is in good company, in particular Martha Argerich, even Sergei himself was guilty of playing too fast (but that may have had to do with getting the music to fit those 78s and their time requirements). One longs to hear the D minor concerto with no cuts--it's so much better that way! Wild has been and is a great gift to us all. He is a true poet--just not so much here! No other pianist has his breadth of repertoire and longevity of career. Alas, I still prefer others on these pieces--Richter, Berman, Guttierrez, Kissin, Michelangeli and Horowitz.
