Family Affair

Absolutely Incredible... Both conductor and pianist make their daddy and grandpappy proud (respectively). Really the only other performance I can compare this to is the composers own; not that this is anything close to an exact copy, but it has the same fire, lightness and complete understanding of where the piece is moving. Highly Highly reccomended.

This man is a Genius

An outstanding interpretation of his music. Well played! Buy the whole thing. Listen to it and be amazed.

This is a marvelous recording, rarely ever do you find a recording with three generations of musicians in one piece. Maxim Shostakovich has dedicated much of his life to performing his father's works the way he would have them played if he were still alive. Seldom every do you find albums with Dmitri Shostakovich Jr. as the soloist yet he is a deft musician.
Now, focusing on the music; The soloist plays extremely clean with nearly no mistakes. It is played very dynamically by both the soloist and the orchestra. The essence of the piece is clearly brought out by this magnetic interpretation. As with all of Shostakovich's concertos, the orchestra part is not hard (for the most part) in regards to notes, yet it is exceptionally hard to follow the soloist rhythmically. The orchestra does a good job, nevertheless, you do hear the orchestra getting slightly behind the pianist. However, it is minuscule, barely noticeable and is to be expected with such a challenging piece.
The arrangement of the String Quartet is decent but I recommend buying the quartet rather than the orchestral adaptation. Although it is a fine performance, the stark incongruity in each individual movement is not brought out as well as it would be in a quartet setting.
Over all, it is a wonderful album.
