Fine playing, but a little overblown
True there is plenty of passion in this disc of Liszt, but it lacks the finesse and grasp of structure that the recent Aimard recording brings to the table. It's all well and fine, but we've heard these sort of readings before. If you have these pieces in your collection you may well be advised to pass, but if you're looking to update it with a newer recording with the same old, stale approach, this is the one for you. -Bz
I completely disagree!
These performances are of monumental importance--Zimmerman provides a unique balance of lyrical and electrifying; perhaps only Richter comes close. I have many recordings of the sonata, and this one sets the standard; the concerti are also stunning, as is the Totentanz. Don't hesitate to add these to your collection. Stale? You have to be kidding!
Zimerman plays like no other! This version of Totentanz is the best I've heard, and the Sonata is amazing! One of my best purchases yet
