Album Review

One of guitarist John Scofield's best sessions for Gramavision, this live date features his regular band of the period, a quartet with keyboardist Robert Aries, electric bassist Gary Grainger and drummer Dennis Chambers, who had been playing together regularly for a year at that point. The close communication between the musicians on such numbers as "Pick Hits," "Protocol" and "Blue Matter" could only come from the players fully understanding each other's musical personalities. The music, electric but adventurous, funky but definitely exploratory jazz, is difficult to describe, but easier for Scofield's fans to enjoy.

5 Stars are not enough for this CD!

If you are a guitarist, bassist, or drummer, you MUST own this CD. Consider it part of your musical education. Gary Grainger and Dennis Chambers are absolutely amazing on this live set from Japan. The tunes from Still Warm and Blue Matter are injected with some steroids and given a serious workout. If you only want to own one John Scofield CD, THIS is the one to have, IMO. Play it LOUD!!!!

If you like Jazz Fusion this is the album for you.

I mean come on, you have got two musical greats- Scofield and Chambers. The album is a must have.

One of the best live recordings I own

John Scofield and one of his best backup bands are in top form for this live recording. Dennis Chambers and Gary Grainger keep things very funky while Scofield keeps things very jazzy. If you like jazz/funk fusion, you'll love this album.

The only thing that would make this release better would be the addition of the three songs ("Still Warm", "The Nag", and "So You Say") from hard-to-find Pick Hits Live 2nd CD. If you can find the 2nd CD of Pick Hits Live, get it. "The Nag" has a great Gary Grainger bass solo followed by an unbelievable 11 minute Chambers drum solo.

One of the "big three" of late 20th and early 21st century jazz guitarists (along with Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell), John Scofield's influence grew in the '90s and continued into the 21st century. Possessor of a very distinctive rock-oriented sound that is often a bit distorted, Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, fusion, and soul-jazz. He started on guitar while at high school in Connecticut, and from 1970-1973 Scofield studied at Berklee...
