Picture That

Picture That

Coming out of Brooklyn's Park Slope neighborhood, Pumpkinhead was a regular on mixtapes and 12-inch singles in the late '90s and was probably best known for his breakout single "Dynamic." He was also a fixture on the legendary Stretch & Bobbito radio show, was featured on tons of first-generation indie-rap compilations, and was in several crews, including Brooklyn Academy and Skeme Team. While several of his contemporaries went on to bigger stages and major labels, Pumpkinhead's solo career never really took off, and he's been steadily grinding away in the underground ever since. Released in 2008, Picture That is his third solo album (following The Old Testament and Orange Moon Over Brooklyn). It finds him hooking up with an impressive lineup of much-loved emcees, such as Del the Funky Homosapian, Talib Kweli, Murs, Jean Grae, and Torae. PH's husky flow and vivid wordplay still sound good, though the production is somewhat hit or miss. Regardless, there's some great stuff on here, especially "Hip Hop Head," "Lords of War," "Underground Master," and the ATCQ revamp "Relax Remix."
