Customer Reviews

First review? Really?

This is really some good stuff that has obviously not garnered the public's acknowledgment I believe it deserves. The whole work beholds the beautiful nature of the african folk tales that it sought out to depict, while at the same time hybridizing the on-par beauty of the [comparatively] Western music of european traditions. Through whatever criticism this recording has apparently received, I think it shares a very good understanding of the cultures it colorfully illustrates, while also remaining accessible to the unfamiliarized listener. It has a very sanguine and optimistic vibe to it throughout, while maintaining a serious undertone all the while... Reflecting an authentic and true attitude of many Africans, past and present. This sans-vocals music exudes an aura that feels very genuine and respective. Overall a beautiful piece of music to sit down with, I would recommend it to anyone with an open mind to both African traditional folk music AND classical stylings - so, good luck, because those people seem so hard to find sometimes.

My favorite Kronos Album

I recently saw a piece choreographed to this music by Smuin Ballet. I loved the music and saved the program so I could go find it... and here I am. Really wonderful ambiance of these pieces... Sunday morning coffee and relaxation. :)

David Harrington, the ensemble's founder and first violinist, was inspired to form the group after hearing George Crumb's Black Angels. By the end of the 1970s, Kronos settled into a tight collaboration between Harrington, violinist John Sherba, violist Hank Dutt, and cellist...
