art evolves

Cantrell's 2nd solo album is awesome; so glad he got to release the double disk set - it's well worth the collective experience. I'm really proud of Jerry for releasing material that wasn't all "radio friendly" and lately, for his approach to the reunion of AIC. He has my repsect. Yes, people are used to another voice with that guitar, but when you give an earnest listen to Jerry's voice: resounding honesty. How could it not work; this is the soul behind the music. Are you willing to let the form evolve? Count me in.

A slab of some of the best original hard rock I've heard in recent years.

There's enough thematic consistency—a "theater of self-loathing"—to qualify this as a concept album. This body of work can be interpreted through the lens of the Lane Staley saga, but only presumptuously. I feel it's more valuable to accept the material on its own merits, which are substantial. Mr. Cantrell was at the peak of his powers when he executed these recordings. One caveat is that this work comprises over two hours of dense, angry, often dirge-like music that exhaustively explores "downbeat" territory including drug addiction, emotional abuse, alienation, loss, defilement and dispair, often in combination. Consequently, this is an initially opaque work that requires patience and affinity to penetrate. Nevertheless, the material is intelligent and inspired, and the catharsis it ultimately delivers is impressive and highly repeatable.

Underrated Rocker

Cantrell is a one man wrecking crew -- brilliant song writing combining metal, grunge, and progressive tendencies, a great voice matching the despondant music, and excellent guitar chops. This album puts on a clinic of great, heavy rock combined with thoughtful, sad messages.

Jerry Cantrell first came to prominence as a member of Alice in Chains, one of the prototypical Seattle grunge bands. With their 1990 debut Facelift, the quartet scored a surprise hit with the ultra-heavy "Man in the Box." Racking up hit albums like 1992's Dirt and 1995's self-titled release, the band rose to the top of the alterna-metal heap. Lead singer Layne Staley,...
