9 Songs, 36 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Pillar Point is the striking electronica of one Scott Reitherman, whose previous work was done with the indie-pop group Throw Me the Statue. His longtime collaborator Charlie Smith serves as the album’s producer, and together they’ve managed an exquisite nine-song cycle that’s light, airy, and danceable and yet infused with deep feeling and soul that skewers somber. Witness the generally ethereal “Cherry,” where all of life’s innocence is haunted by the overwhelming feelings of not knowing what to do with one’s life. The vintage, bouncy ‘80s sounds of “Eyeballs” and its charming melody obscure the sense of alienation that lurks behind the Internet’s facade of sociability. “Black Hole” works harder, with tougher rhythms, again weighted down by Reitherman’s feelings of inadequacy and despair watching love capsize in front of him. Having taken place over a two-year recording process that bounced from Los Angeles to the Bay Area and eventually Seattle, where Reitherman has settled, Pillar Point is an intriguing mix of emotions and valid contradictions.
