iTunes Review

Pilot Talk is Curren$y’s third album but it feels like the first fully realized showcase of his style. The album’s appeal lies in the tension between Curren$y’s molasses drawl and his dexterous writing. In the grand tradition of Snoop Dogg and Devin the Dude — both of whom put in excellent cameos here, especially Devin — Curren$y embodies at once the stoner and the lyricist. There is no underestimating the rapper’s laid-back charisma, but Pilot Talk belongs equally to Ski Beatz, the producer behind 12 of the albums 13 songs (“Prioritize” was produced by Nesby Phips). A veteran beat maker who helped create classic '90s albums like Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt and Camp Lo’s Uptown Saturday Night, Ski provides Curren$y a link to the past and a bridge to the future. His beats are lush but unorthodox. His sonic canvases always include the gaps in which Curren$y loves to maneuver, and even though the music feels dank and basement-grown, there is a stately posture here, reinforced by the presence of live instrumentation. It’s a smoky seduction. Call it blaxploitation music for the Sega generation.

He appeared on Wayne’s Tha Carter II album that same year, then in 2006, Curren$y's “Where da Cash At”...
