Album Review

After making a name for himself as an indie rock sideman with Feist, Afie Jurvanen strikes out on his own with Pink Strat, the debut album from his solo project Bahamas. With a sparse and contemplative blend of indie folk and alt-country, Jurvanen opts to let his guitar and sleepy vocals do a lot of the heavy lifting, steering away from lush production in favor of a more intimate sound. This rawer sound, combined with his careful ear for melody and guitar abilities, helps to set Bahamas apart from the affable folk-pop of someone like Jack Johnson. Every song always has just enough going on in it to be interesting, but remains understated, like the lazy drawl of “Try, Tried, Trying,” which gently plods forward on the strength of Jurvanen’s bluesy guitar work. In a number of ways, Jurvanen evokes the great Randy Newman, bringing his sense of humor to songs like the sweetly mean-spirited “Hockey Teeth” and the blunt heartache of “You’re Bored, I’m Old.” Songs like these show a songwriter who's willing to tell it like it is without sugar coating things for the sake a nice pop ending, adding a sense of realism to the songs that you’re not likely to find in such an otherwise sweet package, and making Pink Strat a great debut for this sideman looking to step into the spotlight.

Great Album for an up and coming band!

I just saw them in Dallas at Club Dada and they are amazing. They should really think about doing a live album. The two female side vocal singers really make the band. Unfortunately they are not featured the album, but still a solid. I really look forward to watching this band progress.

This is by far one of the most consistently chill albums I've ever listened to. I LOVE Afie Jurvanen's voice. Every time I listen I feel like I'm instantly transported to an island. Great stuff, can't wait to hear more!

so lovely.

I had never heard of them until I saw them open up for Noah and the Whale. I fell in love instantly. They are bringing something special to the table. Buy this! and go see a show :)

Bahamas is the solo project of Toronto-based guitarist and musical gun-for-hire Afie Jurvanen. With a carefully trained ear for melody that he’s honed during his time playing with the likes of Feist and Howie Beck, Jurvanen’s solo project has a stripped-down and contemplative sound that focuses on doing more with less, allowing his voice and guitar to do most of the heavy lifting on his quiet, indie folk meditations. Bahamas made its album debut in 2009 with Pink Strat, which was nominated for a...
