One of this Years Best Musicals & Unfortunate Flop
After having only played at the Hilton Theatre for 3 months The Pirate Queen finally releases its original cast album! The Pirate Queen was an amazing and stunning piece of theatre It was personally one of my favorites and I was very sad to see it leave Now that the show is gone the only life left of it is this recording which is simply amazing! The music is beautiful and helps to tell the story of Grace O'Malley If you liked Wicked or Les Miserables....You will love The Pirate Queen!
Music good, musical unremarkable
Some musicals can just stick inyour brain, Songs that just remain with you all of your life. The Pirate Queen was not one of them, at least when i went to see the muscial. I was hoping to see a great musical with Boubil and Shonberg writing and composing the songs. However i don't know whether it was the stage scenery or something. The acting was good, the singing was ok, but the muscial just didn't fly. Seeing many musicals and directing one myself, i could see that it was not the actors, just the show didn't gel. Of course i did see the musical on the third day of its Broadway review. Walking out of the theater i could not remember one song. Making this one of the worst musicals i ever saw. But when i saw the CD for the Pirate Queen, i was weary about buying it. But i have bought every musical CD I ever saw. So I just bought it. But no matter how much i didn't like the musical, when i listened to some of the songs individually, they seemed to teem with new life. Where the musical didn't succeed, the music did. Some of the songs have become my favorite of any musical. "Woman," "She who has all," and "I'll be there" are my favorite. Funny thing is i don't remember hearing them in the theater. For this reason, i gave the CD 3 stars. The musical didn't gel, but the music has soaring melodies and i do recommed it for any musical lover with a deeper sense of music.
I was fortunate enough to see the Pirate Queen twice in Chicago and after hearing the album I know the changes made were to make the CD even better. Stephanie is hands down one of the best Broadway females out there, and Hadley's talent is beyond words. Though the show won't continue on, I'm so happy to get to have the music to listen to forever.
