Album Review

It sounds as if Lake of Dracula managed to find a garbage can large enough to crawl into and do their recording. From the opening to the ending track, the group takes listeners on a journey of primitive rock & roll, and the production complements the band's horror movie soundtrack music. Weasel Walter's guitar sounds as if it has come alive and is having its central nervous system attacked by Parkinson's disease. On some of the album's best songs, such as "Blues Fantastique" and "Coconut Wine," Walter's guitar descends onto them like a bird of prey on a rotting carcass. On other tracks like "Henry Clay," Walter adds layers and layers of cacophonous distortion until they become musical lasagna. Vocalist Marlon Magas drowns in reverb as U.S. Maple frontman Al Johnson (aka the Manhattanite) adds background vocals in the style of an animal that's just been pierced by an arrow. Scissor Girls drummer Heather Melowic (aka Heather M) adds simplistic, yet furious, drumming to counterbalance Walter's guitar. For only consisting of two vocalists, one guitarist, and one drummer, Lake of Dracula manages to create a big noise that's not soon forgotten by any mind open enough to listen.
