The Score King
Planet Twist, what the heck is this? Was what I was saying after Steve gave me his EP on CD. I liked the cover, it looked cool. I got home from LA to Indiana, put it in and was amazed. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I went to LA to a composer meet/greet, met all these big Hollywood names, came home with truckloads of CD's, but the 1 CD from out there I play the most is this little EP called Planet Twist. I mean this CD is competing for my listening time with Horner and Goldsmith and Isham and Giacchino. If you know who they are, keep reading, if not, you really need to keep reading! Track 1, catchy lyrics, I like, it just has a few, but they are catchy. Track 3-The Long Horizon is my favorite. The music, though I could be way off as to the original intent/influences Steve had, is a mix between like 1960's beach, fun hip music. It has hints of early Johnny Williams in it. Also, you hear bits that remind you of a Big Band. One thing that is refreshing is...THERE IS A THEME/MELODY. Composers today, seem to be just doing sound design in movies, no melodies/themes. I want to listen to a CD and remember it, hum later on, you know. With this EP, you will. Again, there seems to also be an influence of like Rockabilly, a type of rock. How Steve was able to combine all this into a very enjoyable listen, proves this guy has HUGE talent.
I'm not typically into this kind of a sound, so for ME, to say, WOW, is pretty remarkable. I'm big into big orchestral dramas, bring me James Horner or Cliff Eidelman, but this is so not my normal cup of tea, but I'm hooked.
I never knew who Steve was before going to LA, but I can assure you, I just ordered his CD and I will be keeping my eyes on him for the rest of my days. I hope he breaks into film scoring, I think, with his unique and fascinating sound, he could be another great one, like Goldsmith, or Poledouris etc.
This music reminds me of like driving in a convertible, top down, on Pacific Coast Highway in sunny California around sunset. I think that setting and this music would be a PERFECT fit. So if you live in sunny CA, go do that and if you don't, get the EP, sit back with your eyes closed and picture that perfect scene, with the help of Planet Twist, you'll feel like you are there. I can't wait to get out to LA and play this nice and loud along the coast!
If your looking for something truly unique with a few influences of other types of music all put together and you like a catchy tune, download this now, you won't be sorry!!
