iTunes Review

Following up the success of their brilliant debut Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables, the Dead Kennedys returned with the excellent EP In God We Trust, Inc. and full-length Plastic Surgery Disasters in 1981 and '82 respectively. This reissue set combines the two and finds the Dead Kennedys doing exactly what they do best; railing against the chaos of the world via an assortment of rollicking tracks that are simultaneously thought-provoking, hilarious, and terrifying. Jello Biafa's warbling vocal menace takes aim against Middle Americans in gas-guzzling recreational vehicles ("Winnebago Warrior"), uptight guys who get crazy once a year ("Halloween"), the alarming growth of the Christian Right ("Moral Majority"), and, returning to one of his favorite targets, then-Governor Jerry Brown on the epic "Moon Over Marin." As always, the rest of the group impresses with their unflappable musicianship, incorporating wild stylistic change-ups and never settling for generic punk rock cliches.

Should not have been bundled with In God We Trust, Inc.

Plastic Surgery Disasters and In God We Trust, Inc. are both excellent, classic albums, but they should have been reissued seperately, instead of on the same disc. They are very different albums and do not belong on the same CD. In God We Trust was released before PSD, but it comes after it on the CD, which makes absolutely no sense.

You will have a holy orgasm

This is the best record by the wittiest, most vicious, smartest punk band of all time. Not only is this one of the very best punk records of all time, it's staright-up one of the best records of the 80s.

The Sgt. Peppers of Punk Albums

While the Circle Jerks may have perked my interest in punk music (not to be confused with "Alternative" music), the Dead Kennedys launched it. My first taste was "Give Me Convenience", but "Plastic Surgery Disasters" was the feast. I have yet to hear (and don't expect to hear) a better or more defining punk album. Highlights include "Government Flu", "Forest Fire", "Halloween", "Riot" and "Trust Your Mechanic", but really there are no bad songs. The accompanying album included (In God We Trust, Inc.) feels more like "Surgery" bonus tracks, but they are still great, especially "We've Got a Bigger Problem Now", which makes a reference to "California Uber Alles" that fans will enjoy.

Formed: 1978 in San Francisco, CA

Years Active: '70s, '80s

The Dead Kennedys merged revolutionary politics with hardcore punk music and, in the process, became one of the defining hardcore bands. Often, they were more notable for their politics than their music, but that was part of their impact. The Kennedys were more inspired by British punk and the fiery, revolutionary-implied politics of the Sex Pistols than the artier tendencies of New York punk rockers. Under the direction of lead vocalist Jello Biafra, the Dead Kennedys became the most political and...
