iTunes Review

This smoky soundtrack to the 1996 romance Playing by Heart alternates between the sizzling modern style of smooth jazz trumpeter Chris Botti and the definitive cool of his late forebear, Chet Baker. The results are intoxicating, evoking a sense of musical chemistry across generations. Botti's horn blowing gently over Lee Musiker's sparkling piano on composer John Barry's wistful "Remembering Chet" is achingly sweet. Baker's own melodic phrasing on his classic Paris recording of "You Go to My Head" is pure tenderness.

Awesome!

I LOVE this album! Not only was the movie a very moving experiance, so is the soundtrack! This album will lift you to newer highs. Very wonderful, relaxing, sexual, soul filling music!

Barry: Always Good, Always The Same

When I heard this CD, it sounded once again like a rehash of The Beyondness of Things, Eternal Echos, Body Heat, etc. Being a musician for 40+ years, I have the utmost respect for the beauty of Mr. Barry's orchestrations. He is however, locked into a limited gamut of melodic variety in his writing. Listen to the three CD's above and you will think you had just played the same song a few moments ago. As for Chris and Chet, I can add nothing to their praises. Both have been blessed with wonderful, lyrical talents. Neither ever sacrifices the beauty of a piece to "show off" technical skills. If you do not own any of the John Barry CD's noted above, this will be a treat. If you own one or more, this will be a compositional let down.

Chet Baker was a primary exponent of the West Coast school of cool jazz in the early and mid-'50s. As a trumpeter, he had a generally restrained, intimate playing style and he attracted attention beyond jazz for his photogenic looks and singing. But his career was marred by drug addiction. Baker's father, Chesney Henry Baker,Sr., was a guitarist who was forced to turn to other work during the Depression; his mother, Vera (Moser) Baker, worked in a perfumery. The family moved from Oklahoma to Glendale,...
