Album Review

As part of Collectables' Great Group Series, the New Jersey doo wop sounds of the Avons are the focus of this decent, yet brief, budget-priced collection. Alongside the original versions of their most popular songs, "Baby" and "You're So Close to Me," are eight similar gems like "On the Island," "What Love Can Do," "Whisper (Softly)," and "I'm Sending S.O.S." Even though the 1956 hit "Our Love Will Never Die" is excluded, this is still an enjoyable and effective overview for the casual listener.

A talented doo wop group from Englewood, NJ, that formed in high school in 1954. Until they caught wind of a Los Angeles-based group with the same name, they were the Robins, and they then renamed themselves the Avons after a river in England. The original lineup consisted of Bob, Bill, and Wendell Lea; Curtis Norris, and Ervin Watson. The quintet woodsheded until confident enough to perform local gigs.
