Album Review

Mercurial, spacious, and immaculately crafted, Nashville-based South African-born indie rock outfit Civil Twilight's sophomore outing sounds like an amalgamation of Coldplay, U2, and Fleet Foxes, with a heavy helping of English art rockers Guillemots tossed in for good measure. If the slick yet winningly elusive, commercial-sounding Holy Weather is beholden to any style, it's the shifty confines of adult alternative rock, but they do enough within the genre's translucent parameters to warrant inclusion in the folk, electronic, and pop worlds as well.

Customer Reviews

Great, but...

This album doesn't have the same power as their first, at least for me. I really liked the soulful, slow tempo of their first album (I literally loved every song) but this album is just too fast and kind of techno-y for my liking. But hey, that's just my preference and in no way changes my view of the band :) love you guys!

The wait is over. Holy weather delivers right on the mark.

I just love the progression with this band. What a cracking sophomore album. This band has matured massively. Its just so well thought out and produced.
I fully expect to hear these songs on radio aplenty. This is going to be a really succesful album for Civil Twilight. Just awesome.

Here's Why You Should Buy This Album...

Why on god's green earth should you buy 'Holy Weather' or any other albums/songs from Civil Twilight? Simply put there a great band that doesn't seem to write and release music just for the sake of jumping to the top of the charts. There a band that seems to have a vested personal interest in the music that they write. In other words the songs they compose seem to have some greater meaning to them and that translates to the listener as well. I don't buy albums because they might sound cool blasting from my car speakers as I drive down my street, I buy them because the songs mean something to me. And if you buy this album there's a VERY good chance they'll mean something to you too. If your on a college budget like me I still suggest you buy the whole album but if your one who likes to pick & choose a few songs to see if a band is to your liking than I suggest the following as a first course to Civil Twilight: "River" (off 'Holy Weather'), Letters from the Sky & Human ( both off Civil Twilight's self titled debut album) and Shape of a Sound ('Holy Weather'). As of now Civil Twilight is a band that you might know of but your friends do not. But trust me, thats about to change so if you love music and you love bands that make music with a passion that is clearly evident in the craftsmanship of there sound than click that buy album button right now. 'Holy Weather' is a great album that any fan of great music would love. Like if you agree with me, dislike if you don't but I'm confident you'll lean towards the former. Preview, Buy, Listen & enjoy the great music from Civil Twilight!

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Originally hailing from Cape Town, Africa, Civil Twilight is an alt-rock outfit that draws parallels to Muse, Pilot Speed, and other like-minded bands with impassioned vocals and stirring, alt-rock songcraft. Brothers Andrew and Steven McKeller were raised in a musical household, having explored their father's jazz collection at a young age while listening to their classically trained mother play piano. In November 1996, Andrew launched a teenaged band with help from his high school classmate, guitarist...
