Old School Pop...At It's Best!

"The Goldbergs" (singer/songwriter/guitarist Andy Goldberg and various ace New York session musicians) aren’t from Seattle but they are classic power pop in the Beatles/Badfinger mold and their new record "Under The Radar" is the best album I’ve heard so far this year. "Under The Radar" sounds like the great solo album George Harrison never made, with 11 perfectly cut gem like songs full of compelling melodies, indelible hooks and buoyant harmonies. There’s plenty of really great, expressive Harrisonesque guitar throughout and even ukulele on the closing track. The lyrics are all about being love sick, heart broken and irrationally sunny and optimistic never the less. Nothing really innovative or ground breaking here, just classic, impeccably crafted power pop and a really strong album from start to finish and in 2008 I think there’s a lot to be said for that.

I DEFY YOU TO LISTEN TO THIS WITHOUT SUCCOMBING TO AN EAR TO EAR GRIN!

Despite the bad name Pop is given by musical snobs who forget what it felt like to hear a Beatles or Beach Boys tune for the first time, The Goldbergs, (Andy, acting alone, for what we are meant to assume) steps forward, unashamedly, to provide a Sophomore effort that takes every great thing about his debut album, Hooks Lines and Sinkers, and raises the stakes all the way up to eleven. There is not a bum in the bunch here, your head will nod, your foot will tap, and you will be transported back to a time when this kind of music was the soundtrack to the butterflies in your stomach when you realized you really were in love with that girl. It will be a long time before I'm a Hero Waiting to Happen finally gets out of your head, but you'll be sad to see it go- a temporary situation that can be remedied with repeated listens, and the material holds up to them every time. Influenced by the aforementioned Fab Four and Surf Sons, yet profoundly original, this is not just bubblegum fluff, nothing cloyingly sugary about the chords that ring clear and true and resonate from deep within your heart. Buy this now. You will NOT be disappointed.

"Musical Utopia..."

The Goldbergs made a huge impression on the power pop community back in 2006 with the release of the aptly named "Hooks, Lines & Sinkers". A tough act to follow, but their latest effort will cause your jaw to drop to the floor once again. If The Goldbergs hooked you once, they will hook you again. The Goldbergs is actually just a single Goldberg...Andy to be specific. Andy Goldberg is a wonderboy writing, singing, arranging, producing, and playing guitar in all of this charming music. I bet he even cleans the studio and cooks a gourmet dinner for his session buddies. The Goldbergs' "Under the Radar" sounds a lot like a lost recording that would surface during the cleaning out of George Harrison's estate (RIP). A treasure trove of golden pop gems, "Under the Radar" is drenched in Beatlesque harmonies and instantly memorable melodies. Goldberg also has a knack for arranging and producing music that would make Jeff Lynne proud...perhaps even green with envy. I also hear the pop genius of Abba in some of the tunes, most notably "I've Had Enough". In my musical utopia, "Under the Radar" would be a number one, multi-platinum record that spawned 7 top 10 hits, 3 going to number 1. But alas the kind of world where good music like this rules the charts is long gone. The three tunes that would have sat at the acme of the chart would include "Please Won't You Please", "Better Times", and "I'm A Hero (Waiting To Happen)". What are you waiting for? Drink it down - it'll take you away.
