iTunes Review

A Brooklyn emcee who's been serving up top-shelf records since the mid-'00s, Skyzoo has consistently impressed heads throughout his career, thanks to countless mixtapes, collaboration joints, and solo projects. Following up his recent concept album Theo vs. JJ, he returns with A Dream Deferred, continuing his tradition of intelligent, highly lyrical hip-hop that focuses on life, love, and BK pride. Produced mostly by longtime co-conspirators 9th Wonder and !llmind, plus DJ Khalil, Black Milk, and Tall Black Guy, among others, he presents another rock-solid collection of 21st-century boom-bap. Guests include Talib Kweli on the bass- and horn-driven "Spike Lee Was My Hero," Freeway on "Pockets Full," and Raheem DeVaughn for the intergalactic synth ballad "Drew & Derwin," while other highlights include "Jansport Strings (One for Chi-Ali)" and the neckbreaking anthem "Range Rover Rhythm." It's nothing inherently groundbreaking, just high-quality rap music from one of Brooklyn's finest.

Worth every penny

This album from beginning to end is worth it. $9.99 is almost like a steal for an album of this quality. It's a shame music like this never reaches the masses it should. But ones who get this music, always appreciate it.

Money Well Spent

When I hear great music like this I shed two tears. One because its proof hip hop is alive and well. The other because more people know about 2 Chainz then Skyzoo....

Skyzoo is back, with a VENGEANCE

So if you've been patrolling Skyzoo's album reviews here on iTunes, you should've seen my name a couple times. Well, A Dream Deferred (ADD) is here, and I just HAVE to put my thoughts down on this masterpiece (yes, MASTERPIECE).

This won't stray too far from my usual theme: Skyzoo is a very honest MC, that puts his all into his releases. ADD is no different, and shows just how potent Skyzoo has become with the pen. He has transformed into probably the top lyricist in the game today, and honestly, it's not really close. The way he puts words together, and crafts his rhymes is amazing.

While he's a supreme lyricist, he also has an uncanny ear for beats. There's been some grumbling about Illmind's recent beats, but fear not, as Sky seems to have pulled some heaters out of the pile. Even Give it Up, which I had heard some rather un-flattering things about, is a banger to me. The production on the entire album is fantastic, and perfectly meshes with Sky's style.

In my opinion, there is not one weak point on the album. From the opening of "Dreams" to the final notes of "Live for the Moment" (yes, the bonus track is excellent, and goes perfectly with the album), you're in for a wonderful ride. The guest features are spot on as well. Freeway & Kweli both add to their respective tracks, which is nice, as getting the features right is sometimes a tricky ordeal. If you're looking for high points, as I said, there are 15 of them. Seriously, I would advise against cherry picking songs. This is a body of work that needs (demands?) to be heard in full, and you'd be cheating yourself if, at the least, your first listen isn't a full playthrough. I avoided all singles/leaks, as I wanted my very first listen to be a fresh one, and it was well worth the wait. I honestly don't know what my favorite song is right now...maybe Rage of Roemello, or Steel's Apartment, or Cost of Sleep, or the opening track (he seems to ALWAYS hit home runs with his openers), or...well...I'm sure you get the point.

Some very good albums have dropped recently (I'm looking at you Brother Ali, Lupe Fiasco & Chino XL). If picking a top 5 right now, I doubt I could do it. But a top 2? That's easy. I know Kendrick is coming, but I'm pretty sure that Life is Good and A Dream Deferred will end the year as my top 2. As far as choosing between the 2? Right now, at gunpoint, it's LiG, but its awfully close.

I'll end this with my normal wrap-up: if you're new to Skyzoo, and like what you hear, then don't hesitate to delve deeper into his catalogue. The Salvation, The Great Debater, Live From the Tape Deck (with Illmind) are all fantastic efforts, and Cloud 9: The 3 Day High (with 9th Wonder) is dope too. He's also got a host of mixtapes that are worth listening to as well. Happy listening!
