Reseña de álbum

"Poinciana" was such a big hit for the Ahmad Jamal Trio that the album Poinciana (recorded just eight months after the original single version) has a remake that served as the title cut. Performed live at the Spotlight Club in Washington D.C., the music features close musical communication between the trio members (who include bassist Israel Crosby and drummer Vernell Fournier) on such numbers as "A Gal In Calico," "Autumn Leaves," and "This Can't Be Love." Recorded the same day as The Ahmad Jamal Trio, Volume IV, this date was equally rewarding and worth searching for.

Hot

I heard poincianna for the first time 2 days ago and damn near lost my mind! So I researched AJ's library of music. This man is a genius. All of his music is awesome. I wonder why I slept for so long???? Peace.

good stuff

I used to own this album in vinyl. Jamal has great technique cadence and poise especially live. Rythmn section on Poinciana is still mind boggling

Classic

There is just something about Ahmad, and the classic jazz cats that have been around for awhile, that I just can't put my finger on. I once took a friend of mine, who couldn't give a flip about jazz, to a number of night clubs in New York -- the Blue Note, the Village Vanguard, Smoke, all of which featured some fine jazz musicians that came into fruition in the 80's. Her reaction was just so-so, and I know that she went just to appease me. However, when I took her to see Ahmad Jamal, she sat there captivated, hanging on every note. In fact, she still talks about that show to this very day, which was quite a few years ago. There just seems to be a depth to his music, as if he is coming from another place, another plane of existence which you just can't find today. With Ahmad, I feel like we should just put a fence around him and declare him a national treasure.

One of the most individualistic pianists, composers, and arrangers of his generation, Ahmad Jamal's disciplined technique and minimalist style had a huge impact on trumpeter Miles Davis, and Jamal is often cited as contributing to the development of cool jazz throughout the 1950s. Though Jamal was a highly technically proficient player, well-versed in the gymnastic idioms of swing and bebop, he chose to play in a more pared down and nuanced style. Which is to say that while he played with the skill...
