Album Review

New Edition spin-off group Bell Biv DeVoe is a good candidate for the kind of limited compilation that the discount-priced 20th Century Masters — The Millennium Collection series provides. The trio broke four hits off their multi-platinum debut album, Poison (1990), one off their remix album, WBBD — Bootcity! (1991), a couple off their second album, Hootie Mack (1993), and a couple released independently. They're all here in chronological order, with a couple of album tracks and a remix of the hit "Do Me" making up the 12 tracks. (Nothing from the 2001 reunion album BBD is included.) The recordings reveal the singers to be horny and self-referential as they make their way through the involved beats that dominate the musical tracks, a successful musical formula for early-'90s R&B. Their moment may have passed, but Bell Biv DeVoe's best is easily encapsulated here.

Poison and Do Me! Show that without bobby brown and ralph tresvant they can rock. All i can say is i want it!

good collection

obviously, their most famous songs are poison and do me but if u want When will i see you smile again, get the remix version off the bootcity album, its better

great poppy drum machine hits

the white gloves and the rolled up shorts say it all. The gangsta song is still house music, it will make you feel like a hard thug, but you are still bobbing your head to Bell Biv Devoe. This is like dance music for sweaty girls with too much make up and not enough dexterity.

Boasting their "hip-hop smoothed out on the R&B tip with a pop-feel-appeal to it," Bell Biv DeVoe spun off from New Edition following the parent group's tour in support of 1988's Heart Break. Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe, all original members of New Edition, complied with the urging of that album's producers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and started fresh with a more street-oriented approach to contemporary R&B. The trio enlisted a variety of producers for their debut, including Dr....
