iTunes Review

Carrying the endorsement of Third Man Records, the St. Louis–based Americana musician Pokey LaFarge will soon likely meet with larger audiences. They're sure to be mesmerized by his exquisite re-creation of music that most of us have only heard on scratchy old 78s. Producer Ketch Secor—frontman of The Old Crow Medicine Show—captures a perfect balance between modern and retro, letting the sound be as clean and clear as necessary without losing the special spark that these instruments create when played together. LaFarge mixes early jazz and western swing, with fiddles, lap steel, cornet, and clarinet joining vintage guitars and LaFarge's authentic voice. He gives the impression that there was no such thing as air conditioning when he was singing "City Summer Blues." Unlike the dark and dirty delta blues, "The Devil Ain't Lazy" courts a far more lighthearted repartee, while "Bowlegged Woman" is similarly jocular. "Home Away from Home" pines for Louisville, Ky., more than few decades ago. Welcome to the glorious past!

Customer Reviews

I don't want to remember what life was like before Pokey

If you do nothing else this year, buy this record, see this band!!!! These are some of the coolest cats around, no bull.

God Bless Pokey!

When Kanye's new album gets more attention than this masterpiece, you know something is afoul, but let those pedestrian listeners keep their dredge. This is real music sung by a real musician, and the album reminds me that good music is still being created. Opening track sets the tone for whole album, which is consistent Pokey, that is… great.
Support this great artist.

Real American Music

Amazing ensemble and hard to believe he is just 30. Buy this and enjoy. This feels like "road trip across America" music to me.

Fusing the sounds of the past with the energy of the present day, Americana singer/songwriter Pokey LaFarge makes old-time country-, blues-, folk-, and Western swing-influenced music. Born Andrew Heissler in Bloomington, Illinois in 1983, LaFarge developed an early interest in American literature and history, as well as roots music of the 20th century. By his teens, LaFarge was combining his passions into his own music, accompanying himself on guitar, mandolin, and banjo. After graduating high school,...
