Customer Reviews

I know it's a cliche, but "instant classic" could be apt.

A wonderful collaboration between Amadou & Miriam and producer Mano Chao. Things start off deceptively quietly with "M'bife" and then take a sudden turn. "Coulibaly" has one of the best opening riffs I've ever heard, and the album just keeps racing its merry way along from there. Perhaps "merry" isn't always the right word, since the three of them are very concerned about the state of the world, but the energetic music makes it difficult to get bogged down. My favorite tracks: "Coulibali", "Senegal Fast-Food" and "Artistiya".

Amadou and Mariam ... It's The Real Deal!!

I was introduced to the music of these incredible Malian musicians by a Senegalese friend who gave me a copy of "Dimanche a Bamako" --- my friend believes that “only Senegalese musicians are any good” --- he is a wee-bit biased. I saw Amadou and Mariam live at SummerStage/Central Park concert series in New York City. This dynamic blind West African husband and wife team, played a high-energy set of rocking guitar driven mix of Malian blues, rock and propelled by searing African percussion, as well as Cuban rhythms and reggae textures. One could clearly see and hear the "roots" of African-American Blues --- the journey across the Atlantic --- from Mali to Memphis". The track, "Coulibaly" featured on this Award winning CD, "Dimanche a Bamako", shows their deep Malian traditional music roots and is a killer live. Manu Chao, the producer deserves much credit. A musical husband-and-wife duo that got its start in Mali, Amadou & Mariam met in 1975 at Mali's Bamako Institute for the Young Blind. Amadou (born Amadou Bagayoko in Bamako in October of 1954) began his musical career in 1968, and by 1974 had joined Les Ambassadeurs du Motel, a leading group (which counted Salif Keita as a member) in his home country. He wound up at the aforementioned institute after becoming blind as a teenager through a congenital cataract. His future wife, Mariam Doumbia (born...
