Reseña de álbum

Rodatempo is a worthy follow-up to the equally exquisite Di Alma. This album is in the same vein of sensual swaying rhythms punctuated by percolating percussion underpinning it all. Chantre's voice is like honey caramel floating above the sprightly guitar and cavaquinho of the great Bau, wistful accordion, sparse but masterful piano phrasing, and fine string and clarinet work. All of the songs are written or co-written by Teofilo Chantre with the exception of "Remembering Cabo Verde," which was written by the great Cape Verdean pianist Amandio Cabral. The themes are mainly concerned with life in his native Cape Verde. There are plaintive songs of the dry land and childhood memories. There are robust dance songs that deal with love, loss, and nostalgia. "Roda Vida" (Rolling Life) is a beautifully rhythmic hymn to life and the people who dream it onward. "Tchoro Quemode" is another standout track that's powered by strong accordion playing and tells of his brothers' homeland hunger. The album mixes changes in tempo from sentimentally soulful morna to coladeira to the samba-influenced "Novura." Each song is a jewel in itself and the album is destined to become a classic of African music. Highly recommended.
