Wayward Angel

Wayward Angel

Despite her many strengths, Kasey Chambers wasn't initially thought of as playful or sly. That changed with "Pony," the opening track of her third album, Wayward Angel. The country singer-songwriter uses a languid rhythm to fantasize drolly about adult life with a baby and a cowboy husband; it sounds as if it's Chambers can barely keep from giggling when she imagines being a "lady" who "won't listen to rock and roll." Even for its jokiness, the song is deeply sexy and also gives Chambers an opportunity to toy with genre and gender expectations. Elsewhere on Wayward Angel, Chambers revisits her usual themes of self-belief, self-doubt, and staying true to one's self. Although she had already proved herself to be an important artist, Wayward Angel reinforces the point with more ample proof.
