Editors’ Notes

Despite her many strengths, Kasey Chambers wasn't initially thought of as playful or sly. That changed with "Pony," the opening track of her third album, Wayward Angel. The country singer-songwriter uses a languid rhythm to fantasize drolly about adult life with a baby and a cowboy husband; it sounds as if it's Chambers can barely keep from giggling when she imagines being a "lady" who "won't listen to rock and roll." Even for its jokiness, the song is deeply sexy and also gives Chambers an opportunity to toy with genre and gender expectations. Elsewhere on Wayward Angel, Chambers revisits her usual themes of self-belief, self-doubt, and staying true to one's self. Although she had already proved herself to be an important artist, Wayward Angel reinforces the point with more ample proof.

Customer Reviews

Fascinating voice, lovely songs 4 1/2 stars

Heard her originally on a radio program and just HAD to buy her CD. I've played this CD for many folks, and everyone who hears it says, "Who IS this?"--in a good way. She has a really interesting voice, at times gorgeous, others a bit whiny, always expressive. Her songs are well written and really stick with you. Harmonies are just lovely. My faves are the simple "Mother" and plaintive "Saturated." It's hard to believe she's from Australia; she has such a natural Bluegrass-y rock sound. I'll definitely be following her career and listening to her other albums!

Wayward Angel

Heard a local singer cover Bluebird and Pony. Had to hear the original. I was not disappointed. Great punk/country sound. Definitely not today's Nashville, thank God. She's the real deal. Great songs, style, and has it all.

In 2000, Kasey Chambers emerged as Australia's first successful country-to-rock crossover female singer. It was just the latest chapter in a unique 25-year life journey. In 1976, hoping to earn a living hunting foxes, Bill and Diane Chambers took their two-year-old son Nash and newborn daughter Kasey into the 100,000 square mile (260,000 square km) sparsely vegetated and generally flat plateau called the Nullarbor Plain. The family would spend seven or eight months of the year on the Nullarbor, resupplying...
