Misunderstood Interpretations

It wasn't so long ago that Nick Drake was known only to a much smaller and more cultured group of music appreciators. By that, I mean era before the Volkswagen commercial and a song in a Wes Anderson film, plus a few more mainstream mentions. (If you remember that, I'm sure you had the same sinking feeling hearing Pink Moon on your T.V.) I feel the other reviews reflect a point of view that is perhaps based on a more sophomoric view of Drake's music and not one that is open to a real alternative to popular music, e.g. jazz. The music in this collection was not meant to recreate the originals or convey nostalgia. And they don't attempt to duplicate the magic of Nick Drake, why should they? After all, no artist wants to be someone else. Everyone loves Nick Drake because his music stands alone, much like the artists on this collection. I think these versions allow us to rediscover songs we have known and loved for decades by artists who are great admirers of a singular musician. Listen with an open mind and don't be hindered by your own expectations of what this music ought to be.

Who are these people?

And who gave them permission to butcher Nick Drake's songs? With the exception of Jesse Sykes version of River Man, there is nothing here so just move along.

Nick Drake

Listen to both the original version of 'Things Behind The Sun' and the cover here and tell me again that Jesse Sykes is the only worthy contribution (and I do like her version). Lord save us from purists everywhere...
