iTunes Review

East River Pipe is the work of F.M. Cornog, a once homeless alcoholic who, with the help of his future wife, cleaned up his life and began recording his music on a home recording unit. While he has often been lumped into the “lo-fi” category for his usage of home equipment, his recordings aspire to sound as grand as Phil Spector — or at least the Beach Boys with whom he shares a haunted pop ghost or two. “Bring on the Loser” recalls the shimmering grace of “Make a Deal With the City” from his debut album, 1994’s Shining Hours in a Can. This follow-up is equally beautiful. Self-produced with help from his wife, Barbara Powers, Poor Fricky surges with ethereal pop numbers like “Metal Detector,” “Here We Go” and “Superstar In France” that with barrels of echo and layers of keyboards and jangling guitars bring back the yearning feel of early to mid 1960s pop music with a modern twist.

Bedroom Studio Masterpiece

THE greatest American independent record of the 1990s. The slow pace, spacey, home-made production, FM Cornog's intimate vocals and lyrics, and Pet Sounds-size melodies...this record will make you cry, it's so deeply sad and beautiful. My faves: "When the Ground Walks Away," "Crawl Away," and "Keep All Your Windows Tight Tonight"...

Born in Suffolk, VA, and raised in Summit, NJ, Cornog followed a difficult childhood with a series of jobs in a carpet warehouse, a greenhouse, and a light bulb factory. After a longstanding bout with alcoholism and an emotional breakdown cost him his job and left him homeless, Cornog hit rock bottom; while sleeping in a Hoboken...
