The point of this re-recording is...

... Polygram Records has not licensed the original "Pop Goes The World" song to iTunes. Because that company owns the rights to it, Men Without Hats has had to re-recordthe song and licensed it to iTunes themselves. Yes, it sounds a little different and you can tell it's not the original recording but it's the only way the song is currently available on iTunes. If Polygram would have put it on iTunes, then Men Without Hats wouldn't have had to re-record it. Maybe they will at some point.

What's The Point In This?

The title of my review says it all. I love Men Without Hats (where is "No Hats Beyond This Point" iTunes???), and "Pop Goes The World" is still one of my all-time favorite albums. However, I'm undecided on whether I'm going to pay for this. Granted; it's only 99 cents, but I don't see the point in them remaking this song when nothing was really added to justify redoing it and instead it sounds pretty much like a carbon copy of the original. I'd rather listen to that because with this new version, I'd be distracted by the fact that it sounds almost like the original version that I know and love, but not quite. If you're not going to improve on the original, don't bother doing a cover; especially if it's of your own song.

Nice update of a new wave classic

When MWH redid "Safety Dance" on "In the 21st Century" I wasn't a big fan -- but in this remake, the original spirit of "PGTW" is fully intact. A little less "pop" but just as much fun with a new vocal and some new instrumentation. If you didn't know it was a remake, you might even think you were listening to the original. Different but not wildly so. Worth the download!
