EDITORS’ NOTES

“Andamos En El Ruedo” and “¿Por Que Me Enamoré?” are two of 2016’s best Regional Mexican songs and the rest of this teenage Sinaloa’s debut is just as good. Full of sharp playing and rural spirit, “Desinfectándome De Ti” and “No Cabe Duda” are achingly lovely without being overly polished. While filling the hole left by his hero Ariel Camacho, Chaidez’s tough-minded but honest style is just beginning to carve its own legend.

About Ulices Chaidez y Sus Plebes

This trio of new generation Mexican Regional corrido and banda trio is led by the teenage singer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Ulices Chaidez.

The band hails from Navolato Sinaloa, and take its name as an homage to one of Chaidez's heroes, the late Airel Camacho y Los Plebes del Rancho. He has been playing music since he was six. Besides guitar, he plays fife, bass, and drums, and is studying accordion and violin. Chaidez worked solo with another group of guitarists while he was in high school (Ulices Chaidez y Sus Humildes), playing festivals and talent competitions locally and regionally. A Del Records executive caught one of their YouTube videos and signed the young singer, who was then 15. His new band, the Plebes, were formed with the same instrumentation as Camacho's group. Ulices Chaidez y Sus Plebes issued their first single, "Andamos en el Ruedo," in August 2016. It went straight to the top spot on several Latin Songs charts, and the band was profiled in Billboard. The song's video received over one million views. Their debut full-length, also titled Andamos en el Ruedo, was issued in October. ~ Thom Jurek
