Roddy Woomble is a talented singer-songwriter who’s recorded several endearing, acoustic-based solo albums. His band Idlewild knows his strengths and does its best to bring out his electric side. Tracks such as “Younger Than America,” with its widescreen heartland thump, and the tribal groove and urban Brit-Pop shine of “(The Night Will) Bring You Back to Life” prove this is a group with a strong will. The group’s Scottish roots can still be heard underneath the rock crush of “Readers & Writers” and the breezy acoustics of “Take Me Back to the Islands.” “Post Electric” expands out into a new-wave/punk assault that’s heavy on hooks. “All Over the Town” swirls with a jangle the Smiths would have envied. “Circles In Stars” and “Take Me Back In Time” are lower-key anthems that are every bit as attractive as their louder counterparts. With the great visions of Roddy Woomble leading them, Idlewild are one solid and engaging group. Post Electric Blues doesn’t have a bad cut on it. Some, in fact, grow in greatness with repeated listens.
