Album Review

Trying to move from a tween audience to a teen one, sisters Aly and AJ Michalka eliminated the über-sweet pop covers and songs about kidnapping on their second full-length, Insomniatic, focusing solely on the very teenaged conundrums of crushes and breakups and doe-eyed love. They've also started making MTV movies, and not just Disney ones, appearing together in the network's straight-to-DVD My Super Sweet 16 (yes, a movie based on the "reality" show), for which they also perform "Potential Breakup Song," also found here. They're older now, their fans are older, and they're hoping they can break from the mouse-eared audience and prove themselves legitimate artists with some staying power. The thing is, the songs on Insomniatic, all of which are at least co-written by the sisters, still sound as if they've been written by two teenage girls — teenage girls with some very adult production help, to be sure — who are desperately trying to sound older while still not alienating their younger fans. The tracks on the album, excepting the aforementioned opener, "Potential Breakup Song," which is guiltily enjoyable, are that same kind of half-rock, half-dance soulless pop that has been played and consumed for years, and doesn't do much to separate Aly & AJ from the rest of what's out there. Perhaps, in a way, this is some measure of success on their part. They are no longer little girls who sing pop music, distinguished only for that, but instead just another pretty, faceless group in a bunch. Yes, it's a bonus that they seem to actually be able to sing (though it's often hard to tell, as numerous effects have been placed on their vocals, perhaps in an attempt to make them sound more adult), and they do have a hand in writing their own songs, even playing instruments on a few, but there's nothing about the sisters or Insomniatic that proves them to be anything more than just another couple of girls.

better than the first

okay, its not the best cd in the world, but its not that bad. there are only a couple of songs i would recommend to download from the cd: 1) Potential Breakup Song - 5/5 - Really catchy. fun. addicting and is always on repeat! i think this is their best song yet. 2) Closure - 4/5 - Pretty good. Not as good as Potential Breakup Song, but not bad. The music is nice. 3) Division - 4/5 - I didnt like this song at first, but I really like it now. it's really fun and kinda catchy. i just really like it :D 4) Like Whoa - 4.5/5 - Like Whoa! this song is really good! i absolutely love it. it's kinda different and will probably be on repeat for awile. 5) Silence - 5/5 - This song is really good! i love it! their voices sound so good in this song! Yeah, those are the songs i would recommend to download. the other songs are just okay. Okay, hopefully I helped a little. well, for the fact that i rated songs that i think are worth downloading.

I personally couldnt ask for more from them! Ive always been a huge Aly & Aj fan but this CD just proves how amazing they truly just for everyone looking at this i shall rate them for you: 1. Potential Breakup Song - 10/10 :: Seriously who doesnt like this song? Its got a great beat and funky lyrics! 2. Bullseye - 9/10 :: I love the lyrics, but the song isnt one of their greatest. Good beat too actually... 3. Closure - 11/10! :: I believe this is about Aj and her recent breakup Joe Jonas. Nevertheless this song is so catchy, its got a great sound, and basically its an amazing song! 4. Division - 6/10 :: I really dont get the lyrics, or like them, and the song is alittle slow... 5. Like it or Leave It - 8/10 :: I love the way the beat goes slow, and then picks up speed, and then returns to slowness...its a great song. The only thing i dont get is why they always say "Together we're one"....but whatever its a good song! 6. Like Whoa - 10/10 :: Catchy lyrics, amazing beat, great vocals! What more can i say? You'll be singing this song in the car, in your house, even in the shower! 7. Insomniatic - 8/10 :: I still dont know the meaning of this word, but the song isnt bad. Kind of a darker song than Aly & Aj usually sing. 8. Silence - 3/10 :: Eh, i really dislike this song. On their last album they were all about speaking out, and now its all about silence..? The song is pretty slow, and the lyrics are kind of repetative. 9. If i Could Have You Back - 9/10 :: Catchy song! Great lyrics too! I definatly love this song. 10. Flattery - 12/10 :: Favorite song off of this album. Amazing lyrics if your looking for some about an ex. The beat is great. The vocals are amazing. the end! 11. I'm Here - 5/10 :: Good lyrics, really slow song... 12. Chemicals React (Remix) - 7/10 :: Im sorry, but i dont really hear that much of a 'remix'. Definatly prefer the original song... I hope this review helped you! =]

Aly and AJ avoid sophmore slump album

With a new electopop flavor, Insomniatic is different from their platinum debut album Into The Rush that had more guitar and almost felt like rock in chemicals react. 1. Potential Breakup Song-10 out of ten, with ten being best this song deserves the best critisism, it is a wonderful song that introduces their new flavor very well. Great choice for the first single. 2. Bullseye-9 This song is a fun song to dance to, the only thing i dont like is the part towards the end where they talk. 3. Closure-8 I love how its kinda fast and slow at the same time 4. Division-9 I dont understand what this song means but i dont care because they have great vocals and love how well the song flows together. 5. Like It Or Leave It-10 This is one of my favorite songs on the whole cd the guitar (i think) sounds really cool and different and i can relate to the lyrics. 6. Like Whoa-9 To me this feels kinda like their fun song to listen to at the beach. 7. Insomniatic-10 This is their best song lyricly. 8. Silence-9 This is a really good slow song. The piano sounds amazing and this song showcases their powerful vocals. 9. If I Could Have You Back-8 This song is good but the guitar in the chorus covers up their voice. 10. Flattery-8 This song is just OK not one of my favorites. 11. I'm Here-9 This is the song that says "we're in love" a great slow song and i love the string instruments used in this song. 12. Chemical React (Remix)-7 I think they could've had a more creative remix than this. One more thing though is that they dont have blush. thats the only thing that disapoints me but its not aly and aj's fault this happened.

Sister acting/singing duo Aly & AJ -- whose full names are Alyson and Amanda Joy Michalka -- showed a passion for both kinds of performing at a very young age: they started playing piano at age six and began acting classes soon after.
