Great Praetorius Album

This album is the most moving of the Gabrieli Consort and Players many historical church service disks. The huge forces playing period instruments creates a sound unlike anything else that is being done today. The sackbut and cornett players are excellent and adds lots of color to the voices, and they can still blow the walls down when called to do so. The vocal music is spectacular most notably on tracks 3 and 4 where remarkable agility meets clarity in a way I have never heard before. The true highlights of this disk are tracks 2 and 31. In track 2 there is a magical moment when Praetorius switches from Latin to German text and an entire “congregation” of professional singers opens up with the main hymn. Track 31 is perhaps the grandest rendering of the timeless Christmas favorite with 3 solo singers, full choir, boys choir, 4 organs, cornett, alto cornett, violin, 2 bass violin, 2 harp, 2 theorbo, viola, tenor violin, 3 sackbutts, shawm, crumhorn, 6 trumpets and drums.

Perfect, Majestic, and Joyous

If you love both early music and holy Christmas (not the schmalzy, commercial stuff, but the real deal) you simply must buy this post haste. It's the one bit of Christmas music I keep in my playlists year-round. Track 2 takes you to the verge of heaven.
