Sons & Daughters

One of the things I appreciate about Sovereign Grace Music (SGM) is their ability to produce contemporary, theologically rich, worship songs. Their latest release, Sons & Daughters, is no exception.

After The Valley of Vision, this is my favorite SGM CD. Songs included in the project are: “meant to direct our attention to the unfathomable love God has shown us in adopting us through Jesus Christ.” The album does this by painting a musical and lyrical landscape with brighter hues and warmer, earthier, tones than other SGM projects. And the songs strike the healthy balance of focusing our attention on the object of our worship while expressing the emotions that keep it honest.

There are more co-authored songs on this CD than previous projects, and a number of them come from SGM’s younger writers. This might explain the mild departure from the more mainstream pop/rock genre of their previous recordings. This is probably the first SGM album to include mandolin, banjo, fiddle, accordion, and Dobro together; the result is a more interesting worship CD with a fresh musical flavor.

The opening track The Prodigal is probably the best written interpretation of The Prodigal Son story we’ve had since the late Rich Mullin’s Growing Young. Written like someone’s actually lived it, it’s lyrically strong and emotionally frank.

Check out the bluesy, Completely Done and Undying Love. The acoustic guitar driven arrangements are sparse and the vocals delivered with an empathetic angst that adds depth to the lyrics.

Or, Precious Children, which touts a lovely vocal against a gorgeous backdrop of gentle Appalachian mountain music. The song is laced with some pretty acoustic picking, beautiful counter-melodies, and even features a banjo lead break. Its pastoral quality can’t help but remind you how good it is to be a child of God resting safely in his care.

God Delights In You is a light hearted, rock-a-billy foot-tapper, calling believers to celebrate God’s goodness in bringing them to Himself.

The swaying, 6/8 of The Greatest Of All provides a fresh take on an old hymn and manages to include a great electric lead guitar work and a solo that compliments and pushes the song along without drawing attention to itself. A fine line to tread in worship songs, but done exceptionally well here.

The Father’s Love is energetic, full-of-life, and is sure to be heard in contemporary worship services around the country. You Gave Your Son and We Sing are a couple of complimentary mid-tempo rockers.

The final three tracks: You Made Us Your Own, Prepared A Place for Me, and You Never Change mix in a bit of the pretty pop and weightier hymn stylings that make up the standard SGM fare.

Sons & Daughters shows us a more diverse side of SGM while providing very useable worship songs with some of the best theological content in today’s Christian Music.

For lyrical depth and musical relevance, Sons & Daughters reaches new heights for Sovereign grace Music. A solid addition to any worship leader, or worshipper’s collection.

Commuter's Communion Celebration

This is one AWESOME CD. It is my "go to" music as I commute up and down Intersate 80 to and from work. I have it on my iPod, my iPhone, and keep the CD in the car. Every song on this CD blesses in such a rich, unique manner. I love THE FATHER'S LOVE, COMPLETELY DONE, and WE SING. I have purchased every Sovereign Grace album and they form the backbone of the 1245 praise, worship songs on my iPod. Even when I have it on shuffle, I tend to fast forward to the Sovereign Grace songs. BUY THIS CD. You will be blessed and find yourself thinking on higher, better, more praiseworthy things. It preps me for my work day and helps me "de-stress" on the way home.

Great, uplifting music

This Cd is amazing! It is one of the best!!
