A Performance for the Ages
This is THE version of the first piano concerto to have. In terms of sheer grandeur, technical virtuosity, and sonic impact nothing else quite compares. Richter lovingly and meticulously takes the concerto apart, revealing details rarely heard in the rushed performances usually given the work. It's like hearing this all-too-familiar concerto for the first time. Awesome.
Difficult Collaboration, Great Recording
There was some conflict between Richter and Von Karajan during this collaboration, but the recording, which is a benchmark performance of this piece, suggests none of that. It is a beautiful recording, maybe the best one of this concerto. This one used to be hard to find here in the USA, but now you can enjoy it...
