Excellent performances, graceful, memorable!

I have loved Paul Jacobs's performance of the Debussy Preludes ever since they were released on a twin Nonesuch LP (!) back in the old days when such a set cost all of $6. They are poetic, whimsical, balletic, and FUN. One gets the sense that he delighted in playing all of these pieces. The balance of the piano is truthful if a little recessed, and that added space allows the music to breathe, especially in pieces such as 'La cathedral engloutie' where the pedal bass can easily overwhelm the sound...and in an overplayed piece like 'La fille aux cheveux de lin' the space makes everything sound that much more spiritual and timeless. Highly recommended.

Paul Jacobs was one of the most brilliant of American pianists. Although his approach to music was intellectual, this did not prevent his interpretations from being touching and honest in feeling, as well as being exceptionally clear in execution and delineation of formal elements.
