Editors’ Notes

Band leader Chrissie Hynde moved from Ohio to London in 1973 and in a few years fell in with the late-’70s punk movement (namely The Damned and The Clash). She soon put together a killer combo, and the band unleashed this Chris Thomas–produced debut in 1979. (Nick Lowe produced the first single, the shuddering cover of The Kinks' classic “Stop Your Sobbing.”) In many ways, this album altered the course of rock ’n’ roll, particularly the kind fronted by women. With songwriterly aplomb, Hynde howls imperatives about love, innocence, and sex like no one before her. (The "Tattooed Love Boys" line “I shot my mouth off, and you showed me what that hole was for” was repeated in almost every American high school hallway.) Her ballsy songcraft had an empathetic side too. “Kid,” for example, is filled with the kind of lyrical tenderness and gentle guitar shine (and one the best guitar breaks in all of rock ’n’ roll) that not only defined Hynde’s career but gave The Pretenders a longevity and timelessness that few might’ve guessed. A true classic.

Customer Reviews

The best album ever!!!

This is a rockin' album. I too have played the heck out of my vinyl. I have it on cd and it was one of the first ones I downloaded on my iPod. Different styles throughout from Brass in Pocket to a techno Space Invader, to the hard rockin Mystery Achievement and TATTOOED LOVE BOYS ( best song ever!!!). Start from the beginning and listen to it all the way through, LOUD. Then hit REPEAT!

Still a classic

I was a sophomore in high school in 1980 when I first heard Brass In Pocket and I thought "Wow, this chick rocks!". When your debut album is this good, you've set the bar impossibly too high for yourself. I still have my worn out vinyl that I will always cherish. I can tell my daughter this is what REAL rock music sounded like. Today's rockers can only dream of sounding as good as Chrissie Hynde. She is a true original. For anyone under 25, download this NOW and compare it to what you're listening to to now.

Interactive booklet is a joke

The album is great, but what is the deal with the interactive booklet? Stupid. Mine opens, cuts off any song I had playing and then runs for 5 seconds with a black screen or have anything interactive at all. Weak!

Biography

Formed: 1978 in London, Engalnd

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Over the years, the Pretenders became a vehicle for guitarist/vocalist Chrissie Hynde's songwriting, yet it was a full-fledged band when it was formed in the late '70s. With their initial records, the group crossed the bridge between punk/new wave and Top 40 pop more than any other band, recording a series of hard, spiky singles that were also melodic and immediately accessible. Hynde was an invigorating, sexy singer who bent the traditional male roles of rock & roll to her own liking, while...
