Get It Straight...These Aren't New Spoon Albums

Telephono was released in 1996 and Soft Effects in 1997. So to the guy who said they sold out ... gimme a break and get your facts straight first buddy, this is an old album back when they were first starting out. And also, don't ever compare these guys to Fall-out Boy...thats just wrong.

The word on this...

I own the original telephono. For the clueless, Spoon started out as a Pixies band in Austin, playing UT parties and south by southwest. Spoon had a female bassist who sang back-up just like Kim Deal. After getting a record deal, they kicked the bassist out of the band, and started moving away from the Pixies style music and became more beetle-esque. If you love the Pixies, you will love the telephono portion of this CD. If you hate the Pixies.... I remember hearing Dismember (even the titles of the songs are like Pixie's titles) on KNACK (RIP) in Austin, when Austin was still fully wierd. My opinion - telephono rocks! Dismember is 1:45 of perfection. Its the only Spoon album I own - I never got into the beetle-esq style.

This is a necessary Re-Issue of Spoon's Debut LP from 1996 (and follow up EP)

Look at some teenage photos of your cool uncle when he was a teenager. He was a wildman, spraying his sweat and spit in a sweltering nightlcub in front of exactly 9 people. With their monster of a debut, Spoon (Britt Daniel) at once paid their debts, dues and declared their musical tastes in an album of intense power/punk/pop songcraft. It laid the blueprint for the career that has seen them become perhaps the most loved independent band out there. Soft Effects EP (tracks 15-19), for my money, packs more memorable hooks into its 18 and a 1/2 minutes than many other bands can summon over the course of two or three LPs. Not just for Spoon fanatics, this reissue from the celebrated Merge label stands alone quite nicely, thank you.

Formed: 1994 in Austin, TX

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

With a heady blend of precision punk and serpentine classic rock (the band has drawn comparisons to everyone from the Pixies and Sonic Youth to Elvis Costello and Tom Petty), enigmatic, Texas-based indie pop outfit Spoon went from underground press darlings to one of the genre's premier commercially and critically acclaimed alternative rock acts. Formed in Austin by singer/guitarist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno, Spoon released its debut EP, Nefarious, on the small Texas imprint Fluffer Records...
