iTunes Review

San Diego's Pinback makes modestly propulsive, thoughtful, guitar-oriented rock that won't raise the hairs on your arms as much as it might get you thinking about that novel you told someone you'd write someday. Spare and clean percussion, bass lines as stealthy and warm as old sneakers, and uncluttered yet filigreed guitar notes impart a somewhat intellectual vibe. Making music together since 1998, multi-instrumentalists Zach Smith and Rob Crow have created their own musical language. It feels as fluent and natural as a babbling creek or a cooing baby. Strings dance lightly with fingerpicked guitars, snares interlock and skip with electronic beats, and Crow's vocals are the rudder, a mellow and steady guide leading the way. His delivery and the winsome, reticent vibe of "Sherman" have an emotional pull not unlike Death Cab for Cutie. More charged tunes, like "Proceed to Memory" and "Denslow, You Idiot!" swing and swagger like a well-behaved drunken sailor bent on finding one more beer before last call: a detour seems likely, but somehow the course is stayed.

Super, do purr (like a cat?)

Pinback is a very important part of my musical life and lucid dream states. When the submarine breaks down, or when the comrads act cold... this is the music I look to. Buy this album or don't, don't care, and don't stare at each other too long. When the time comes to lay down the fake dolla, holla.... Honey, you know I will because it is a part of what I need and mostly what I want. And maybe a Mint Julip would be nice from time to time?

First time pre-ordering a album on iTunes

I am a long time Pinback fan, and I have long awaited for another album! I really love "Proceed To Memory" and the rest of the songs I hear. Pinback is one of those bands that I can listen to when I am feeling down, calm, relaxed, stressed, happy. Regardless of their music it puts me in another mood of mellow and happy. Rob Crow and Zac Smith are two talented musicians!

A real beauty...

Taught, precise, yet soothing instrumentals and exquisite, mellifluous vocals. I never write reviews on iTunes. In fact this is my first. I liked this album enough to "speak up" and say so. Enjoy...

While a rotating cast of instrumentalists finds loose assembly under the Pinback name, the partnership of Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow is at the heart of the some of the most complex, postmodern indie pop happening on the West Coast. In the first few days of 1998, Smith (of San Diego-based Three Mile Pilot) and Crow (of Thingy and Heavy Vegetable) formed a part-time recording project under the name Pinback. The simple plan grew more involved while Three Mile Pilot took an indefinite hiatus...
