Another great recording... I own the CDs. This is all of the music from the ballet, not just excerpts. And if you think ballet music is for wimps or girls, listen to "Dance of the Knights" or "The Duke's Command". Sounds like great film music. Someone should SERIOUSLY film a version of Romeo and Juliet and use this as the score. My favortie track: Mercurtio. Unfortunately, my favorite part is not in the sample. Anyway, great music.

Prokofiev's, Rome and Juliet, Op. 64

I have a challenge to those who say, "...if you've heard one symphony orchestra you've heard 'em all...". First initiate a search of Prokofiev's, Romeo and Juliet. The search results will offer several recordings by several different orchestras from around the world. Now pick an orchestra; let's try Cleveland. Ok now pick a track and listen to a sample, let's use "Dance of the Knights" for this challenge. Now pick another orchestra, how about the UK's flagship orchestra the LSO with the amiable Andre Previn conducting. Be sure to select their version of "Dance of the Knights". Hear the difference?? It's dreadfully slow, the ensemble play is sloppy, and the string sections intonation - well, let's leave it be shall we. So, there you have it. The proof is right at your fingertips. Now don't get me wrong I'm not from Cleveland, and I'm not necessarily rooting for the Cleveland Orchestra. Although Cleveland has produced a very good recording, San Francisco Symphony's version of Romeo and Juliet with MTT conducting blows Cleveland right out to sea. It's truly earns *****. Unfortunately it's not available on iTunes.

Well Done

Very well done.

Cleveland, Ohio, is a large port city on Lake Erie founded in 1796. Despite its large population of central European immigrants, it long lacked a full-time professional orchestra and relied mostly on visiting artists. In 1915 the Musical Arts Association (MAA) was founded to facilitate such concerts, but under the guidance of Adella Prentiss Hughes changed its mission to establishing a permanent orchestra. In 1918 the association hired Russian-American conductor Nikolai Sokoloff to bring together...
