iTunes Review

Pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, one of Italy’s outstanding jazz musicians, deserves more recognition in the U.S. He’s recorded dozens of albums since the ‘70s, and the 2009 release, Dream Dance, is an excellent addition. Here Pieranunzi leads a trio that includes the drummer Joey Baron and the bassist Marc Johnson, two players the pianist has collaborated with off and on for a quarter of a century. The group's distinctive sound is rooted in the post-Bill Evans tradition but still isn’t quite like anything else. Pieranunzi, Baron, and Johnson cohere beautifully as a unit, and are particularly sensitive to timbre. On “End of Diversions,” a piece that brings to mind the dark modernist vibe of mid-‘60s Miles Davis, the group is in fine form: Baron is wonderfully responsive to Pieranunzi, and Johnson’s inventive bass drives the band hard. “As Never Before” finds the group deftly turning out a lovely ballad, the piano notes organically emerging out of a bed of hushed brushwork and full-bodied bass tones. And those are just two of the fine tracks: the art of the piano trio is in full bloom throughout Dream Dance.

Abosolutely perfect! A great album. Songs do get repetitive-I recomend previewing a few and buying them-they really are great! A really new album, too. Nice, pleasant, refreshing suprise from these three talented artists! I've never heard of them before, looking forward to finding some more of their work. I recomend "Castle of Solitude" if you're looking for a calm, soothing song, or "Dream Dance" for a nice energetic and calming combo. Great job!!! :)

Three of the best

Three of todays top jazz artists. As a big jazz fan for decades now, I'm a little embarased to say that I just discovered Enrico Pieranunzi. I saw him live in NYC with Paul Motion and Steve Swallow last year. Wow! I went straight to the store and started searching for CDs (remember those little silver discs?) He is one of Europe's most celebrated artists and has a large catalog of recordings with Paul Motion, Charlie Haden and others. This album is great, but I can't wait until the live recording from Birdland comes out. They had the tapes rolling that night and it was great. Highly recommend anything you can find by Pieranunzi.

One of my favorite piano trio albums- lyrical, rhythmic, heart-meltingly gorgeous. "Castle of Solitude" is my top track.

A superior post-bop pianist influenced by Bill Evans and McCoy Tyner but long possessing his own sound, Enrico Pieranunzi is one of the top jazz pianists living in Italy. He began studying piano when he was five, partly from his father, who was a jazz-loving guitarist. Pieranunzi became a professional when he was 19, playing with trombonist Marcello Rosa's quartet. Since then, in addition to leading his own groups, Pieranunzi has worked with many top players (both Europeans and Americans) including...
