Album Review

The "walls" referred to in this album's title are the artificial boundaries between jazz, classical and World Music. David Amram (heard here on piano, French horn, guitar, flutes and percussion) has long been a pioneer in crossing between genres. With altoist Jerry Dodgion, baritonist Pepper Adams, and an oversized rhythm section, plus an oud, viola, dumbeg and five percussionists (including Candido), Amram performs seven of his diverse compositions, two of which also have vocalists. Intriguing music.

No More Walls David Amram

If you know about anything original about America, you'll know about the music of David Amram. Sorry, but he's a musician's musician. This was (I think) his earliest album, and probably the first of its kind in 1971 no less...a combination of world music, beatnik, classical and worth every moment you listen. Always did exactly what he wanted to do; and he was doing it way before anyone else figured it out and well, copied him! If you want to know where so many now popular musicians got their ideas, check it out. Oh, and he's the only guy on the planet that wrote the music to Jack Kerouac, and Kerouac loved him.

Authentic Unique Sound

This album is a great mashup of bop jazz and world music. It is very accessible to a casual listener but equally compelling. I find myself playing these tunes in my head quite a bit over the years. It's a great slice of genius, a musical montage covering lots of ground in just seven pieces. Great occasional beatnik music too… perfect for road trips, crawfish boils or just chillin' under a bridge with a bottle of Thunderbird.

Musical compartments mean nothing to David Amram, whose compositions and activities have crossed fearlessly back and forth between the classical and jazz worlds, as well as those of Latin jazz, folk, television, and film music. In addition to his rare (to jazz) specialty, the French horn, Amram has also recorded on piano, recorder, Spanish guitar, and various percussion instruments. Amram spent a year at the Oberlin College Conservatory (1948) but graduated from George Washington University with...
