Album Review

Instead of being weakened by changes in the band's membership, Southern Pacific actually grew stronger with the new lineup, as their second album Killbilly Hill demonstrates. Highlights on the record include the title cut and a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac" which was a sizable hit. The record is more country than their debut, which makes Killbilly Hill all the more highly recommended.

Southern Pacific's best

With the departure of Glen Hardin and Jerry Scheff, and the arrival of Stu Cook and Kurt Howell, Southern Pacific released their best album, and one of the best country albums ever. With even stronger songs than those on the group's self-titled debut, and a heightened country flavor, "Killbilly Hill" is one of the most overlooked albums of the '80s. While their cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac" became one of the groups best-known songs, the true standouts - thanks once again to the note-perfect and emotionally charged vocals of Tim Goodman - are "A Girl Like Emmylou" and a darkly sinister cover of The O'Kanes' "Bluegrass Blues." If the album stumbles at all, it may be on the ballad "Don't Let Go of My Heart," which almost derails the momentum "Killbilly Hill" has built up to this point. But the song only seems weak due to the incredible strength of the rest of the material. Almost a quarter century after its release, "Killbilly Hill" sounds better than ever.

Southern Pacific formed in 1983 around vocalist Tim Goodman, guitarist John McFee, drummer Keith Knudsen, bassist Jerry Scheff, and keyboardist Glenn D. Hardin. Both McFee and Knudsen were ex-Doobie Brothers; this rock & roll background would continue to tarnish for some the band's country-rock sound. Despite the adversity, Southern Pacific secured a deal with Warner, who issued its self-titled debut in 1985. A mixed bag, the album featured Tom Petty-penned rock songs alongside more countrified...
